East Kanyamkago is one of five wards in Uriri Constituency, alongside West Kanyamkago, North Kanyamkago, Central Kanyamkago, and South Kanyamkago. Established in 1997, Uriri Constituency spans approximately 380.70 square kilometers in the southwestern region of Kenya, specifically within Migori County.
Geographically, the constituency extends from the central to southeastern parts of Migori County. It shares borders with:
- Kilgoris Constituency to the east.
- Awendo Constituency to the northeast.
- Ndhiwa Constituency to the north.
- Nyatike Constituency to the west.
- Suna East Constituency to the south.
Administratively, Uriri Constituency comprises a single sub-county—Uriri Sub-county—divided into two divisions: Uriri and Oyani. These are further segmented into seven locations and nineteen sub-locations, forming a well-structured local governance framework.
Demographics and Population
East Kanyamkago has a population of approximately 6,679 people according to available data. Uriri Constituency is predominantly inhabited by two ethnic communities-the Luo and the Abaluhya-who coexist peacefully. Kiswahili is the common language (lingua franca) in this sub-county making communication across different ethnic groups easy.

In April 2025, the Department of Agriculture launched a major agricultural program in East Kanyamkago Ward, aimed at boosting productivity and strengthening local food systems. Spearheaded by Chief Officer for Agriculture Mr. Isaac Madafu, in collaboration with the area Member of County Assembly (MCA) and Uriri Sub-county agricultural officers, the initiative reached 261 farmers, distributing certified maize and bean seeds along with 1,044 kilograms of high-quality planting materials.
This effort aligns with Governor Ochilo Ayacko’s strategic agricultural agenda, which focuses on improving food security, driving economic stability, and uplifting community livelihoods by equipping farmers with the tools and support needed to cultivate their land effectively
Education System: Educational Challenges and Institutions
East Kanyamkago, like the broader Uriri region, faces challenges in its education system. There are few secondary and primary schools with adequate facilities impacting the quality of education available to local children. Notable primary schools in the area include St. Mary’s Oyola Primary School which is one of the nine elementary educational institutions in East Kanyamkago.
Girls’ education faces particular challenges with many families opting for early marriages due to the combined pressures of inadequate educational facilities and widespread poverty in the region. Further improving transportation infrastructure, President William Ruto during his May 2025 development tour of Migori County will commission the Stella-Gogo-Sibuoche tarmac road in Uriri Constituency. This road project is a big investment in the area’s connectivity and economic potential.
Housing
The housing sector is getting attention through a big affordable housing initiative. As part of his development agenda, President Ruto will be launching a 200-unit affordable housing scheme in Uriri Constituency. This project will address housing needs and create employment opportunities and stimulate economic growth in the area.
Energy Infrastructure
The Gogo Hydropower Redevelopment Project is a big infrastructure project near East Kanyamkago. Located at Gogo Falls on the Kuja River approximately 30 kilometers northwest of Migori town this project will increase power output from the current 2MW to 8.7MW.Cost KES 2.65 billion this project will increase power supply to the area for both residential and commercial use. The plant is located along Migori town via tarmac roads (A1 or C13) through several rural roads making it part of the local infrastructure network.
